As I was thinking about someone in my life that I have seen displaying servant leadership I thought about my dad. I remember them telling me about when we moved to South Carolina where my daddy was to become the Pastor of the Old Mt Zion AME Zion Church. At the time we were about 800 miles from home and the money coming in from the church was barely enough for us to survive. One Friday evening there was barely enough food for one person. My dad decided that it was best that my mom and I ate and he would find something to eat later. After the food was prepared for us to eat a friend’s grandmother invited me to their house to eat. So that night all three of us were able to eat. This is just one example of how my parents have given up something so that I can have whatever I needed or wanted as I was growing up. Even now I think of him pastoring a church and he does not get a salary because the church is not in a financial position to give him one. We rise above our own self-interest and reach out to others. (Fisher/Martini p.151) He is putting the church’s needs ahead of his own needs. He shows humility in such a way that makes me proud that he is my father.
